What's actually in Palm Beach municipal water.

Palm Beach County municipal water is safe to drink by EPA standards — but "safe" doesn't mean "clean." Your utility adds chlorine and chloramines to kill bacteria in the pipes between the treatment plant and your house. By the time it reaches your tap, you're drinking, showering in, and washing your clothes in chemically-treated water.

Here's the chlorine residual measured in major Palm Beach cities — most exceed EPA's secondary recommendation of 0.5 PPM for taste:

Inline cartridge vs. whole-home tank — what actually works.

Most homeowners get talked into a cheap "inline cartridge" filter that screws onto the water main. They cost $100-200, look impressive, and don't do much. Here's how they compare to real tank-based carbon filtration:

Inline Cartridge FilterTank-Based Carbon Filter (Ours)
Removes chlorinePartially — for 2-3 months, then performance drops fastYes — consistently for 6-8 years
Removes chloraminesAlmost never — needs catalytic carbonYes — catalytic carbon engineered for it
Whole-house flow rateDrops 30-50% — slow showers, weak pressureNegligible drop, full pressure maintained
Filter changesEvery 3-6 months ($40-80 each)Every 6-8 years
True cost over 10 years$1,200-2,400 in cartridges + you change them yourself$1,500-2,800 installed, you forget it exists
Removes VOCs & PFASNegligibleYes — engineered for it

Signs you should filter your whole house.

  • Chemical or "swimming pool" smell from the tap, especially when filling a tub
  • Dry, itchy skin or scalp — worse after showers, better when you travel
  • Hair feels stripped, faded, or brittle since moving to South Florida
  • Eyes sting in the shower or after washing your face
  • Coffee, tea, or food tastes "off" even though you use good ingredients
  • Rubber seals in dishwashers and washing machines wear out quickly
  • You have kids, elderly, or anyone with sensitive skin or breathing issues
  • You already have a softener but the water still smells/tastes treated
Most of these are caused by chlorine. Removing it costs less than people think and changes daily life.

What's at stake — chlorine in your shower.

Health context — research summary

What you breathe in the shower matters as much as what you drink.

6-10x
More chlorine absorbed through skin & lungs in a 10-min shower than 8oz of tap
83%
Of chlorine in a hot shower vaporizes — you breathe it in
0.5 PPM
EPA secondary standard. Most Palm Beach cities exceed this 3-4x

These numbers come from US EPA and a 1989 American Journal of Public Health study on inhalation exposure during showering. Carbon filtration removes 95%+ of chlorine residual at full house flow — eliminating both the breathing and skin exposure.

What makes our filtration different.

We use tank-based catalytic carbon systems — not the cheap inline cartridges most plumbers install. Catalytic carbon is engineered for chloramine (the harder-to-remove cousin of chlorine that most municipalities use), and tank systems handle whole-house flow without dropping pressure.

Clack WS-1 Control Valve

Same premium valve as our softeners. Modular, serviceable, manufacturer warranty.

10" × 54" Catalytic Carbon Tank

Sized for whole-house flow without pressure loss. Media lasts 6-8 years before replacement.

Removes the Bad, Keeps the Good

Strips chlorine, chloramines, VOCs, PFAS — keeps beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium.

No Salt, No Drain Required

Carbon filtration doesn't need salt or a dedicated drain. Lower install complexity, lower running cost.

What's included in your install.

  • Free on-site water test — chlorine, chloramines, TDS, pH at your kitchen tap
  • System sized to your flow — based on bathrooms, occupants, and incoming pressure
  • Same-day install — when booked before noon, typically 2-3 hours
  • All plumbing connections — we install at your main, bypass valve included
  • System programming — set to your water profile, not factory defaults
  • Full walkthrough — we show you the bypass, what to watch for, who to call
  • Workmanship warranty — from us, plus Clack manufacturer warranty on the valve

Whole-home filtration FAQ.

How much does whole-home filtration cost?
Quality carbon filtration systems installed run $1,500-$2,200 standalone. Bundle with a softener and save $300-500 vs. two separate installs. See the cost breakdown above for the typical line items.
Do I need filtration AND a softener?
Most Palm Beach homes benefit from both. The softener removes hardness minerals; the carbon filter removes chemicals like chlorine. They do different jobs. Bundled install is faster and cheaper than two separate calls.
Will it affect my water pressure?
Properly sized tank-based systems have minimal pressure impact (1-2 PSI typically unnoticeable). We size to your home's specific flow — cheap inline cartridge filters are what cause pressure drops, not real tank systems. See comparison table above.
Does it filter the water for drinking too?
Yes — every tap including the kitchen sink gets filtered water. If you want even higher purity for drinking specifically, add a reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink — they pair perfectly.
How often does the carbon need replacing?
6-8 years for residential systems in Palm Beach. We service it as part of any maintenance visit. You don't have to track it — we'll let you know when it's time.
